In terms of content, design, and mechanics, it is extremely unusual for a game of its vintage. From a gameplay point of view it’s not of the highest quality, but it isn’t bad either. But it is such a bizarre game that it’s worth experiencing just to see what happens. In spite of the title, this is just a single game with two regional variants on offer. Save states and a rewind feature can be used when you play each game in Zombie Mode, while the Normal Mode offers a more traditional challenge. You can catch falling humans to power-up your shot, and you’ll need those upgrades to have any chance of surviving this absurd game. It has a bizarre premise that tends to grab attention, and I suspect it is that, plus the small print run of the original games, that has brought us here. It’s a competent side-scrolling shoot-em-up, but hardly a great one. The original NES cartridge can go for hundreds of dollars loose, and even the Japanese Famicom cartridge costs well over a hundred bucks. Zombie Nation always seemed like one of those games that could show up on the Wii Virtual Console or Nintendo Switch Online during a particularly quiet week, but it never did. The special key increases the range within which bullets graze your ship, but also slows your ship down. When the meter becomes full, your ship is temporarily invincible. When bullets graze your ship the graze meter, which is displayed in the bottom-right corner, increases. The number of bombs you have is displayed in the bottom-right corner. The special key releases a bomb, which destroys enemy bullets. Your ship slows down while your laser is being fired. The game has the following modes: Normal Mode In the initial screen, use X to choose the mode, and Z to select a level.
